Umred-Karandhala Wildlife Sanctuary (UPKWLS) is a hidden wildlife wonderland located in close proximity to Nagpur city. Just a couple of hours drive from Nagpur station, you can immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty of this sanctuary. This sanctuary gained popularity when the legendary tiger, Jai, known as the largest tiger in India, migrated from Nagzira and settled in Umred around 2013. His majestic presence attracted tourists from far and wide, boosting the sanctuarys reputation. Although Jai mysteriously disappeared from the area in 2017, Umred continues to captivate visitors. His contribution to the tiger population growth in this sanctuary remains significant. Umred serves as a vital corridor connecting Tadoba, Pench and Nagzira. Tigers migrate through these corridors, playing a crucial role in tiger conservation. Tourists now refer to this place as Fairys Land due to the presence of the iconic tigress, Fairy. With her unique and beautiful stripes, Fairy has become a symbol of grace in the sanctuary. After Jai and Chandi, Karandhala-Gothangao witnessed a decline for a few years, but Fairys presence has revived the sanctuarys popularity. After mating with Surya, the current ruler of UPKWLS who migrated from Tadoba in search of territory, Fairy successfully gave birth to five cubs in her last litter and has been an exemplary mother. One of her bold and beautiful daughters from a previous litter, known as F2 Female, now rules over Gothangao. In her current litter, Fairy is caring for four tiny cubs, marking a flourishing period for the park. The dominant male, Surya, is the son of the world-famous Maya, the queen of Tadoba, and the mighty Matkasur, making him a formidable presence in the forest, despite the existence of some intruders. Umred-Karandhala is a paradise waiting to be explored. The sanctuary offers three main gates: Karandhala, Gothangao, and Pauni. Each gate welcomes you with unique landscapes, serene backwaters, meadows, and an abundance of rich flora and fauna, enhancing the beauty of this forest. UPKWLS is renowned for its tiger and leopard sightings, and visitors may also encounter Dholes, Indian Gaurs, Blue Bulls, Spotted Deer, and the captivating Sloth Bear. You will find a range of luxury and budget accommodation options near the sanctuary, ensuring a comfortable stay. Do not miss the opportunity to savor the local Sawaji-style meal, which is a major attraction for those visiting Umred. The sanctuary is open from mid-October to June, based on the monsoon season, providing ample time for you to explore its wonders. Experience the magic of Umred-Karandhala Wildlife Sanctuary and create memories that will last a lifetime!
