Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve

Nagzira National Park is a stunning wildlife sanctuary known for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The name Nagzira originated from a Nag temple located at the heart of the sanctuary, as well as the presence of a lasting water source that flows from Pongezara, creating the meaning of Zira (zara) in Marathi. The sanctuary, spanning an area of 116.54 square kilometers, was declared in 1970. In 2012, the state government incorporated the sanctuary into the Tiger Project by merging it with an additional national park. The surrounding forests are characterized by hilly slopes, forming the Gaikhuri Hills of the southern Satpura range. One of the main attractions of this sanctuary is its diverse flora, fauna, and abundant wildlife. Visitors have the opportunity to spot majestic creatures such as Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, dholes, wild boars, mouse deer, spotted deer, sambar deer and many other endangered species within these forests. Nagzira Forest is a paradise for bird watchers, with over 170 species of birds and 49 species of butterflies. Renowned birder Kiran Purandare, also known as KIKA, spent a significant amount of time in Nagzira and eventually settled in this beautiful place. Unlike other parks, Nagzira is not overly crowded, offering visitors a chance to enjoy fresh oxygen, tranquility, and an authentic wilderness experience. Located 120 kilometers away from Nagpur, this renowned tiger sanctuary showcases the awe-inspiring wonders of wildlife. Nagzira has eight entrance gates, namely Nagzira, Kosamtondi, Murpar, Murdoli, Balapur, Pongezara, Mangezari, and Chorkhamara. The recent additions of KOKA and Nea Navegaon have extended the forest zones of the original Nagzira. The best time to visit Nagzira is from 1st November to the end of May, allowing you to fully explore the park. Please note that the park is closed every Thursday, and during the monsoon season from 16th June to 30th September, the park remains closed annually for safety reasons. Discover the wonders of Nagzira National Park, where natures beauty awaits you at every turn.
